What is Cathodic ProtectionCathodic protection is an electrochemical technique of protection from corrosion of metal structures exposed to an electrolytic environment (land, sea water, fresh water, chemicals, concrete, etc..) That can be aggressive towards the metal. The material of choice for the sacrificial anode is zinc. The usesA traditional application of cathodic protection is that for the external surfaces of pipes or steel tanks buried or immersed in sea water. What we do in Cathodic ProtectionIn cathodic protection, the metal structure to be protected not having to behave as an anode is made more electronegative than the potential of "free corrosion" that would assume the same structure in the electrolyte in a "natural". This is achieved by sending, in the opposite direction to the corrosion current, a protection current whose intensity therefore the resulting current is null or is directed towards the metal. |
